The video for Bombay sees Pablo Diaz-Reixa, aka El Guincho, prelude the song by reciting part of Carl Sagan’s introduction to his 1970’s television series Cosmos.
The music itself, with its intensely melodic steel drums and new romantic Spanish vocals, is a far cry from the portentous, ambient Vangelis compositions that soundtracked the seminal astronomer’s imaginary voyage through space.
But perhaps El Guincho is merely referencing the sheer awe and admiration with which Sagan faced the universe, and this first single from the Spaniard’s latest album Pop Negro, is infused with a similar joy and wonder.
There are blissed-out-on sunshine beats and rhythms that dance like moonlight on a silken sea, yet this is not a banal Balearic holidaymaker on a Caribbean cruise. There is depth to this party music and Bombay manages to explore inner space while still shaking its poolside posterior.
