Computer Magic - About You song review

At first listen About You, by one-woman New York act Computer Magic, seems like a solid throwback to the days when Phil Spector terrorized young ladies into making heart-breakingly perfect doo-wop music.

But as the song’s measured, military-sharp drums march on with eerie precision, you notice that the vocals, though appearing to be convincingly lovelorn, have a distancing monotone tinge.

And then the possibility arises that this might actually be computer magic. That there is no 21-year old called Danz behind the moniker and About You is actually a song composed by a PC suffering from unrequited love – a feeling totally emphasized by the line “I’ll just wait here on standby”.

But dammit, if that computer hasn’t just captured these torrid emotions in three epic minutes of glorious pop that even a demanding genius like Spector could be satisfied with.
