In a post apocalyptic future, a cold glimmer of hope flashes behind a thunderous rumble. Circuit boards shimmer a bright melody and a voice, that has been auto-tuned to hell and back, recalls a distant refrain.
This is Discovery – a duo featuring members of Vampire Weekend and Ra Ra Riot – and this is their synthetic version of The Jacksons’ I Want You Back, taken from their self-titled debut album.
It is the sound of the triumphant Terminators tuning into a glorious remnant of human endeavour and suddenly regretting their rival’s eradication. The victors have emerged from dystopian nightmare into an anticipated utopian dream, but all dreams are laced with wistful longing. There are no more chances – mankind and Michael Jackson are gone.
This is what it sounds like when droids cry.
