Golden Silvers - True Romance (True No. 9 Blues) single review

A comparison to baggie preacher braggarts Reverend And The Makers is not the most auspicious of starts to a review. But if you ever thought that Jon McClure’s outfit could do with less talk and more grooves, Golden Silvers just might be for you.

True Romance
is the London trio’s third single and precedes their forthcoming album of the same name. There is a bit of McClure’s relentless chat about the vocals but any sense of irritation is negated by a bass line so deep it could have its own module on a philosophy course.

With the groove so firmly in place its simply a case of adorning the rest of the song with arse-slapping “ooh oohs”, a slick vocal refrain and percussion – lots of percussion. The rhythms come in from all angles. Hi-hats fizz, beats stutter and cowbells are so prevalent it’s like being in middle of a Swiss mountain stampede.

Yet aside from all these self-consciously cool elements, the song works because of the simple brilliance of the chorus’ vocal hook. Like Spandau Ballet getting wasted with The Happy Mondays, True Romance is classy but in your face.
