The new project from Belle and Sebastian’s Stuart Murdoch gets a stunning introduction as the gorgeous voice of Irish born singer Catherine Ireton lilts over a soft piano. A lone violin slips in and you quickly find yourself sinking into a kind of musical bliss that went out of fashion with Carly Simon.
The tempo picks up with a simple acoustic guitar rhythm and string flourish reminiscent of Bond theme You Only Live Twice – a touch of glamour that contrasts sharply with the lyrics about the drabness of a Monday night.
Come Monday Night is a beautiful song that doesn’t seem to have a place amongst today’s hipster electro and identikit indie, but that has always been Murdoch’s modus operandi. Why fit in, when you can stand out so brightly.
