The Brian Jacket Letdown - White Sky single review

North London five-piece The Brian Jacket Letdown have been described as a “folk rock” band, but based on their latest single, as the chorus says, “you’d never never never never never never never never know”.

White Sky starts off as ambient electronica with a functional beat and quirky melody, before bursting to freaky disco life with a funky riff and that fine falsetto chorus. Handclaps and various percussion instruments strut around before the verse calms things down slightly.

Here, singer Will Harper adopts a voice of breathy naivety, a bit like Syd Barrett but on a Doobie Brothers record. It’s an interesting mix that highlights their ability to blend genres as well as instruments. They’ve been working on their debut album since 2007, but the evidence of White Sky suggests it has been time well spent.
