Jack Penate - Tonight's Today single review

Perhaps we’re confusing him with other duller male solo artists who were popular a couple of years back, but the prospect of listening to a new single from Jack Penate was hardly enticing. How wrong could we be?

With the excellent Paul Epworth on production duties, Tonight’s Today is a fine piece of baroque pop. Aside from filling every second with all manner of sound, from the African rhythms and melodies to the mass handclaps and the fast, dubby beat, Penate himself adopts an interesting, reggae-tinged yelp that adds flavour to the catchy chanting chorus.

There’s so much going on but, crucially, Tonight’s Today also works as a very simple, even one-dimensional, pop song. A surprising and intriguing taste of his second album, due out in the summer.
