Brooklyn producer and DJ Drop The Lime also trades under the moniker Curses!. Primarily used for a healthy output of remixes, Curses! also released the excellent old school rave track Hungry For Love last year.
His new single The Deep End takes a completely different route and could almost be called a proper song. Vocalist Maggie Horn sings “we have got to change some things round here”, over a portentous piano loop and a guitar riff so taut it could slice the trigger finger off the meanest cowboy. This is a fistful of Dollars, nightclub style. The 4/4 beats squirm and shift, launching scattergun attacks on your senses, while jazzy piano licks flit around your feet.
So much happens in a truly layered four and a half minutes yet The Deep End maintains a straightforward dance floor appeal, that is amply bolstered by two superb remixes. Holy Ghost! turns the song into an epic eight minute disco workout, while Dutch electro hero Bart B More cuts the whole track to pieces over a bass line so dirty it’s a surprise some local kids haven’t scrawled Wash Me on it.
If ever you thought dance music had lost its fun and invention, allow Curses! to re-excite you.
